Project: The Eyes Have It
Objective:
Take a series of portrait photographs that emphasize the eyes.
How will you call attention to the eyes? Find a creative way to isolate them so that when the viewer looks at the portrait, the focal point is the eyes. Think of props that you could use to achieve this, hats, your hands, tree branches, a piece of fabric, glasses etc.
Requirements:
1. Five photographs are required. At least two must be 8x10.
2. One of the prints must be sepia toned.
3. All prints must be matted.

you need to print 3 quality 5x7 photographs with good contrast. We will look them over together and discuss contrast, dodging and burning, and using contrast filters.

Today we work with studio lighting to fill up the rest of our roll of film. If you did not fill yours, finish off your roll of film after school.

Film Developing
- Developer 7 minutes. Agitate off and on during this time. Agitate 30 seconds, still 30 seconds. DO NOT SAVE THIS CHEMICAL. DISCARD WHEN DONE.
- Stop Bath. 1 minute. Agitate off and on. SAVE THIS. POUR BACK INTO APPROPRIATE BOTTLE.
- Fixer. 15 minutes. Agitate off and on. SAVE THIS. POUR BACK INTO APPROPRIATE BOTTLE.
- Wash Bath. 20 minutes.
- Photo Flo
- Hang to Dry
Paper Developing
- Developer. 1-2 minutes. Develops the image, the magic.
- Stop Bath. 30 seconds- 1 minute. Stops the chemical developer from further reacting on the sensitive paper.
- Fixer. 2-4 minutes. Fixes the paper, hardens the gelatin on the sensitive paper. Fixes the image permanent.
- Wash Bath. 10-20 minutes. Washes off all the chemicals.

- add images in after you write the 3 pages, either at the end of the paper or plop them in the text. This will then make your paper 4+ pages.
Thursday we will review camera functions, aperture, and shutter speeds. Friday we will go outside and begin shooting.
Your first assignment is to shoot 12 quality shots. The requirements for this assignment is to use proper camera settings and proper developing process and times. You are trying to develop the 6 quality prints with good contrast and a sharp image.
Don't forget to write down the lighting conditions, shutter speed, and apertures. Also don't forget to bring your coats and hats to class on Friday.

To get started, you will need photographic paper, not the digital photo paper you can buy from Walmart or Staples. You will need photo light sensitive paper. You also need black & white film. You can buy from Camera Outfitters in Lafayette or from Roberts Camera in Carmel or you can purchase from Southmont High School. Southmont High School offers individual as you need, a roll of film is $2.50, paper is $0.50 per sheet, or you can purchase a pack of 2 rolls of film and 30 sheets of paper for $20.
As for a camera, first start by asking your family and friends if they have an old 35 mm slr camera you can use. Make sure that it has manual settings. Southmont also has cameras to rent for $20 for the trimester or you can rent from Camera Outfitters in Lafayette. Rented cameras will need to stay at school, we will shoot around the campus.
You will need a folder to keep your negatives, contact sheets, prints, and notes in. You will also need a small pocket notebook to carry with you while you shoot for writing down you settings.
