The above handouts can help you understand shutter speeds and apertures.
Shutter Speeds
Inside your camera lens are blades that act like a fold up door. Think of your shutter speed like your front door. When you open the door, you let in lots of light or a little light depending on how fast you open or close it.
You will find your shutter setting knob or button shows numbers like "B, 2, 4, 8, 30, 60, 80, 125, 250, 500, 800, 1000" and maybe more. These numbers are measurements of seconds, they are actually fractions of seconds- 1/2 or half of a second, or 1/500 of a second. That's fast! The B is a manual door opener, on this setting, as long as you hold the trigger button (shutter release button) it will stay open until you let go. Remember, anything slower than 1/60 of a second is too slow to hold, you need a tripod.

Light Meters
You will need to learn how to use your light meter. This is a must! A light meter measures the light of the subject you are photographing and will give you either the F-stop or shutter speed you need for a successful photograph. If your camera's light meter doesn't work, download a light meter app to your phone.
For Iphone- Pocket Light Meter Free.
For Android- Lightmeterfree
